What's Happening Next Week at Crossplay
I have some big news to share: I'm taking a vacation.
Folks, I’m tired.
When I first learned that I was losing my job, there was a sense of relief and, frankly, excitement. I’d earned three month of severance from my nearly seven years at VICE, and the summer was about to start. I started to imagine taking my kids out of daycare for a month, and spending weeks having a kick ass vacation with them. Then, the company went into bankruptcy. Then, my severance became an open question. (I still have not received a drop of my promised severance.) Then, it became clear no job was waiting for me on the other side of this layoff. Despite my decades of experience in writing and reporting about video games, I was not able to find a single full-time job to replace the one I was about to lose. I wasn’t able to even find an interview for one.
Which is all to say I spent my last weeks at VICE furious planning what would later become Remap and Crossplay, a hail mary attempt to see if I could go into business with myself and my colleagues and find success, happiness, and stability. I’m humbled that’s been the outcome of that gamble. Both Remap and Crossplay are doing well.
But like I said: I’m tired. My family cancelled a planned vacation when our finances fell apart. But now that we’re on better footing, I want to reclaim some of that time I’d been dreaming about with my kids, free of worries. And so that’s what I’m doing next week, as the four of us head to Wisconsin to hang out, and frankly do as little as possible, besides swimming by the beach and sleeping in. I’m looking forward to it.
As such, Crossplay will go dark next week.
I had originally planned to run a series of interviews I’ve been doing over the last few weeks, but my time kept getting crunched in various ways leading up to this time off, and ultimately I decided to put my trust in you, the same way I put my trust in you when this all launched. Crossplay won’t be in your inboxes over the next week, if that’s okay. Look, I don’t have corporate vacation pay to fall back on! I’m just predicting you’ll want to keep reading and supporting this newsletter, knowing I’ll be back soon.
If you’ve trusted me this far, I hope you’ll trust me turning off my brain for a few days.
I’m not worried! Er, mostly. I’m always worrying. But all of you always surprise me.
See you in a week.

There's something about this choice that is in fact entirely related to your subject matter of parenting. I'd hope an audience interested in this would just as easily see how needed this is. 👍
I’m not a parent, just a fan of what you have to say. So while a lot of the extra benefits of a paid vs free subscription weren’t worth it for me, thanks for this post that reminds me it totally is, because the money will help you out; that’s all it needs to do. Have a great week off!
