I recently had to have The Talk with my 7 year old about microtransactions. He's watching Youtubers play these free to play games and was begging for them but I explained how we don't like to get games that keep making you pay money to play them. Being able to say that anything on the Apple Arcade tab of the App Store is fine, as long as the content is appropriate, has made things a lot easier.

That's awesome to hear. I think any parent can say they've had a similar conversation, though maybe not always with the out that "hey you can play anything on Apple Arcade."

30 here - my friends all basically love Sanrio and will instantly snatch up Kuromi sweatshirts, Gudetama keychains, Aggretsuko coin purses, and Hello Kitty tupperware. It's a safe sort of collection and cute-ifying your space, like Kirby or Studio Ghibli, unlikely to seem out of place alongside everything else. This extends out into, like, influencer spaces - partying e-girls, fashion models, Twitch streamers.

I think it basically comes along with the growing normalization of anime. Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon were in reruns when I was in elementary school - the arrival of stuff like Pokemon and Naruto pretty quickly swept up lots of people my age.

Sanrio's starting to acknowledge this, too. The Netflix anime Aggretsuko, starring the Retsuko character, is mostly about the drudgery of an office job, institutional sexism, and cutting loose with a beer and karaoke. She cusses - a lot! Highly recommend checking that out sometime.

"Is Hello Kitty more of an adult thing these days?"

I thought of Barbie when you asked this question. So many brands that have existed through a few generations have an interesting challenge and opportunity to appeal to different groups, sometimes simultaneously, sometimes not?

Our 4 year old is OBSESSED with Hello Kitty but definitely isn't ready to play this now. We might have to get an Apple Arcade subscription and try this out with her telling me what to do. Our almost 8 year old might enjoy the Apple Arcade offerings over the Amazon Kids stuff now that he is older and reading on his own. We've got an old iPad lying around so it might get some new life!

I’ve been playing on my iPhone, and I will confirm that it’s better with a controller as you suspect!

Can't wait to try it in the next few days. Great to hear.
